3 Common Carpet Cleaning Questions

When it comes to doing things around the house, carpet cleaning is about the last thing any of us truly enjoy doing. But the truth is, keeping your carpets looking clean and fresh is one of the best things you can do for your home. That said, here are 3 of the more common questions that people ask regarding carpet cleaning.

1. How Frequently Should My Carpets Be Cleaned?

This is a question just about everyone has at some point and time. Is there a set schedule as to when you should clean your carpeting? Although there is nothing etched in stone so to speak, the experts do say that using a cleaning machine or having them professionally cleaned once a year is pretty much standard.

I would agree with that, but it may not be true in all cases. For example, if you have a family like we do with children coming in and out all the time, etc., then once a year isn’t going to cut it. You would need to bump it up to twice a year. It really depends on the traffic your floors get.

One other quick note to mention here is that even though you feel your carpets are not dirty because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it is true. Pollens, pet hair and dander, dust mites and other dirt can quickly go right down into the fibers without you seeing it. For that reason alone it is a good idea to clean them once a year.

2. Which Is Better… Renting Or Buying A Carpet Cleaning Machine?

This is a great question. There are obviously pros and cons with either choice. Renting is cheaper than buying, and it can be a great choice for a one-off cleaning. Like if you are moving out of your rental and need to clean the carpets, or some other situation where you only need to use the rental a couple of times at most.

Buying a machine is the better long term solution for most everyone. Shelling out $25-$35 for a rental, plus the costs for detergents, can easily get expensive after a year or two. You can buy a machine that does just as good of a job for the price you’ll pay over that period of time.

The other big advantage is that you can use anytime you need to. When you rent you will have to use it right then and there, which can be quite an inconvenience at times. It is for these reasons, and several others, that I would generally recommend buying to be the best route to go.

How Do I Find A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company?

This may seem like a rather obvious question to answer, but finding the best carpet cleaning company can be a bit more than simply opening up the phone book and hiring the first one that shows up on the page.

The truth is, you should take the time to get at least 3-5 quotes from different companies. Prices and services provided will vary, and it may save you a few hundred dollars as well. The best method is to have the company come out and give you an in home estimate. It’s free, or at least it should be, and it gives you the opportunity to ask questions and know what to expect from the company if you hire them. You avoid misunderstandings about who is going to move the furniture out of the way, or whether a certain stain in your carpet will come up when they clean it, etc.

Although it may seem a bit time consuming, it will be well worth it once you see the completed job and your family is enjoying their freshly cleaned carpets again.
