Best Laryngitis Home Remedies Using Therapeutic Essential Oils

Laryngitis remedies using essential oils are far superior to most over-the-counter, synthetic choices because they create deep healing, rather than just covering up the symptoms. You’ll get over the laryngitis quicker and feel better while you’re healing and afterwards.

What Is Laryngitis?

It’s an inflammation usually caused by an infection of the vocal cords. It’s often the result of an upper respiratory infection of some type starting with a sinus infection, a cold, a sore throat, etc. and settling into the vocal cords. The cords swell, changing the sound of your voice. In severe cases, the voice becomes only a hoarse whisper. Your cords will often be covered with a hard, dry, incrusted mucous that must be dissolved.

Try an Aromatic Mouthwash

Make yourself an antibacterial mouthwash by using two drops of tea tree oil in a half cup of warm water. Put it in a water bottle or a container that you can close and shake vigorously to disperse the oil molecules throughout the water. Immediately gargle and swallow.

The Lick Trick

You’ll want to frequently take a trace of tea tree and mix it with the saliva of your mouth and swallow. We call this the “lick trick” because it’s easiest to lick the trace of oil off the back of your hand. You don’t want too much.

Put a drop of spearmint or peppermint essential oil in all your drinking water every day, even for a month after you’re feeling better. This will give you a deep cleansing, and you’ll love the refreshing, cooling taste of the water. When you have laryngitis, drink more water than usual to help break up the mucus on your vocal cords.

Antihistamines or any over-the-counter remedies designed to stop or dry up a cough or cold symptoms would make the laryngitis worse, so always avoid cold and cough remedies. Using these synthetic remedies tends to drive the infection deeper into your body and actually manifest elsewhere. Work with your body to naturally loosen the mucous and allow the infection to run its course quickly and naturally. Using oils in lots of different therapies will speed the process and help eliminate the infection completely for deep, permanent healing.

Use Oils in a Compress

Prepare a simple compress with four to five drops of a respiratory blend in a half cup of hot water. Use a mixture of oils like rosemary, tea tree, eucalyptus radiata, fir, peppermint, ravensara, or spearmint. You can use one or two of these oils alone as well. Dip a washcloth in the mixture, wring it out and apply it to the base of your neck covered with a dry cloth.

Oils in the Steam of Boiling Water

Boil a pan of water and add a few drops of a respiratory blend or one of the single oils discussed earlier. Place a towel over your head to contain the steam and inhale deeply until the fragrance starts to go away. You can blow into the water to agitate and increase the steam. Add a few more drops and inhale until you’ve inhaled about 20 drops of oil in all. Keep reheating the water as often as necessary.

Don’t diffuse oils in a dry room when you have laryngitis. That only hardens the mucous. Instead you can diffuse oils in a steamy bathroom as you shower or bathe. In fact using about 20 drops of oil in a hot Epsom salts bath and at the same time turning on the diffuser, also with about 20 drops of oil will help to break up the mucous as you soak.

How to Avoid the Coughing Stage of a Respiratory Infection

For many people, the last stage of a cold is often bronchitis, unless you can stop the infection on its way down your respiratory system. An infection often starts as a virus in the sinuses or throat, then it makes its way into laryngitis, and finally bronchitis.

Do everything you can from taking lots of essential oil capsules, taking hot baths or showers night and morning while diffusing oils, putting respiratory oils on your feet and chest after every bath, and using oils in all your water.

At the first sign of a cough, try to stop it in its tracks before your bronchioles become inflamed. Put cold compresses with peppermint oil on your chest at night before bed to keep those bronchioles cool and calm. If you start coughing during the day, have a little herbal tea or warm water with a drop of one of your favorite oils in it, like peppermint, spearmint, basil, or lemon.
