Carpets make a room feel more welcoming and comfortable. But keeping them clean can sometimes be a daunting task. Here are some simple tips which if followed can extend the longevity of carpet, prevent it from any kind of damage and even maintain its shine and luster.
Avoiding shoes – Shoes should be kept away from the carpet as it contains deposits of dirt, mud and oils. You can also use an entrance mat that is capable of retaining the soil particles from the shoes. You can also wear socks or slippers at home so that the oil that secretes from the bottom of your feet does not dirty the carpet.
Use vacuum cleaners regularly – Another simple way is to vacuum the carpet at regular intervals so that the debris does not set in. This regular home cleaning procedure will also save money as you can avoid expensive cleaning products.
Avoid liquid carpet shampoos – You should never clean the carpets with liquid carpet shampoos as they do not completely rinse out and the sticky residue that is left behind attracts more dirt. Instead of liquid carpet shampoos, opt for dry carpet cleaners and always choose mild cleaning products to evade color loss.
Never rub – Removing a stain from the carpet can be a difficult task. A stain should not be rubbed as that will spread the stain and make the fiber weaker. At times it seems that you have cleaned a stain but it resurfaces time and again. In such a case, use a thick cloth to cover the area to allow it to absorb the stain.
What to use to remove carpet stains
Most food stains can be removed with the help of shaving creams. The stains must then be rinsed with water and vinegar solution. Another method of stain removal is to opt for blotting the stain with a brake cleaner and rinse it with soap and water.
Stains from red wines can be removed with the help of club soda and red dye stains can be removed with a peroxide and water solution. The mixture needs to be applied for 30 minutes and then washed with water and vinegar solution. Enzyme products can also be used to remove stains. They are available at marine stores, RV or pet stores.
A mixture of peroxide and baking soda is also capable of removing stains and even odors. The mixture must be tested before use because it is capable of discoloring the carpet. The carpet then needs to be rinsed with the vinegar and water solution.
The use of alcohol is also an excellent way of removing ink stains. Things like gum or wax need to be frozen first and then chipped off to get them off the carpet.
Before applying any kind of chemicals, solutions or heat, it is always advisable to opt for a patch test or else the carpet might face early destruction. A hair dryer or an iron should never be used as it will only seal the stain permanently on the carpet.
Also, carpets should be frequently deep cleaned or steam cleaned. This can be done with the help of a deep cleaning machine or a professional cleaner. You should be aware of the fact that within every six months, a thorough cleaning of the carpet is required to ensure its longevity. A regular cleaning is also important to get rid of allergens and organisms like carpet bugs and beetles and to give your home an extra shine.
