How a Carpet Installation Company Puts in Basement Carpet

A basement remodeling job can create an extra living space in your home, and a carpet installation company can make the job go much easier. For someone without experience, putting carpeting on concrete floor can present challenges. When you hire a pro to do the job, it gets done without hassle or worry.

The first problem that has to be overcome is what to do about moisture. Part of this may be done by a remodeling company which does work before the carpet installation company comes in. Concrete sealer is put on the floor, followed by polyethylene waterproof sheeting. Then, thick plywood boards are screwed into the concrete floor, through the sheeting. Then, the project is ready for the carpet installers.

The carpet installation company will do their measurements of the basement area, either before the remodeling company puts down the plywood, or after they have finished. They will keep use these measurements to cut the carpet, and the pad if necessary.

Tack strips must be nailed into the edges of the room. The carpet installers will make sure to put a nail on each end and in the middle of each tack strip. These carpet strips will be used to hold the carpet in place once it has been stretched to fit inside the basement room.

The carpet installation company will put down the carpet padding at this point. Then, they will trim off the excess and glue it down with carpet glue. Carpet glue can be very messy if you put it on yourself. You have to trowel it on, and the glue will ruin your trowel if you do not clean it immediately. Also, if you get it on yourself, you will wear it off, because you can not clean it off.

When the carpet installation company cuts the carpet piece, they will use the measurements they took earlier, and then add one inch all the way around. They will then place the carpet piece inside the area to be carpeted. Assuming there are baseboards in the basement, the extra inch will be tucked under the existing baseboards. It will be positioned over the tack strips, and will grip onto those strips.

The next step is the stretching of the carpet. It is very important to get the carpet stretched very well; otherwise, it will grow and you will not have a smooth carpet. Many people are not careful enough about this on their basement carpets, and thus there are a lot of basement carpets out there that are lumpy and loose. A carpet installation company will make your basement carpet as tight and smooth as any other room.

The installers will use a special knee kicker tool to stretch the carpet into place. This is a physically demanding job, and requires sturdy knees and a strong back. If you do not feel capable of kicking the carpeting into place with your knee, you would be better off hiring a professional. A carpet installation company can do the job quickly and easily, and save you the pain and aggravation of doing it yourself.
