How to Clean Carpets With Vinegar: A Home Made Solution

There are many home made solutions that one can use to clean carpets but the use of vinegar seems to produce the most satisfactory results. While many people may be knowledgeable of this, how to prepare the solution and do the actual cleaning is something that is not very clear. Let us go through the simple process to help out the people that would like to try it in their homes.

The basic requirements

The best results on carpet cleaning with vinegar are achieved when the vinegar solution is used as the cleaning agent in a steam carpet cleaner. These machines are available for hire in the groceries or home improvement stores. However, if you don’t mind the cost of buying such a machine, it is even better for you. If your intention is remove a stain and not to clean the entire carpeted, a simple brush and vacuuming machine would be enough.

Mixing the carpet cleaning solution

There are actually no strict regulations as to the proportions of vinegar and water that you should use in the carpet cleaner. Some people report to have used a quarter as much vinegar as water in the mixture and achieved quite good results. Others make the mixture in 50/50 proportion. I would therefore say that you are free to use as much vinegar in the water as you deem enough. However, the amount of vinegar should of course not be more than the amount of water. It is important to keep in mind here that the vinegar to be used is the white distilled one.

Once you have the mixture ready, you simply need to follow the instructions in the user manual of the carpet cleaning machine that you are using. Most cleaners are actually simple to use.

Using vinegar to remove carpet stains

You can also use a vinegar mixture to remove stains from your carpet. What you need to do is to mix the white vinegar with enough baking soda to make a paste. The quantities should be such that you have enough mixture to apply over the stained area. Use a brush (an old tooth brush can work well) to scrub the over the stained area. Leave the mixture over that area for a while and when it dries up, use a vacuum cleaner to remove it. This should remove the stain but some stains may need more than one treatment.

Advantages of cleaning carpets with vinegar

Apart from the fact that vinegar is effective in removing stains from carpets, it is also a very affordable cleaning agent. It is a way of avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals and has no effects on your children or pets, although we are advised against long term us of vinegar. It also helps in getting rid of bad odours such as those from pet urine.
