How to Clean Up Basement Flooding

So you walk down the stairs in to your basement only to find that your basement is flooded and your possessions are all soaked. What can you do now? Basement flooding is a major problem in certain areas of the country and flood water can cause major damage to your basement and cause major headaches for you. Let’s take a look at what you can do to help avoid basement flooding.

First, make sure you get all of your possessions up off the floor. Anything stored in cardboard or thin wood boxes may be very damaged by the flood waters so be careful when picking them up, you don’t want the bottom falling out on your breakables. Make sure you get everything out of the way because mold and mildew can build up on things even if water wouldn’t normally damage them.

Next, inspect the area where the water is coming from. Try to determine whether the flooding is coming from the basement walls, seeping through the foundation from outside, or perhaps it’s a leaky pipe or some other plumbing problem.

If the water is coming through the foundation, you’ll want to get it repaired immediately. If there are cracks in your basement foundation you can hire a contractor to help fix it. What you might need to do is clear any standing water away from your foundation to prevent it from flowing through. Some landscape reconstruction might be in order if you have standing water next to your foundation on a regular basis.

If you find that the flood damage is coming from a pipe you need to determine whether the pipe is just leaking or broken. The best way to tell is the amount of flood damage in your basement. If there is a lot of water odds are the pipe is broken and you should call an emergency plumber right away. If the pipe is just corroded and leaking then you may be able to patch it temporarily until a plumber can replace it. Either way consult a professional.

Then let’s take a look at what damage the flooding has done. Are the walls stained? Is the carpet damp? All of this needs to be dried out properly or you will wind up with mold and mildew problems. Don’t take mold and mildew lightly, it’s more than just a foul smell, mold and mildew can cause major health problems, especially for those people with asthma or allergies. If you aren’t sure how to thoroughly clean and/or dry your basement from flood damage, you should consult a professional.

Bottom line, flood damage is a major problem and should be treated very seriously. Don’t take chances with your home and your health, if you have basement flooding take care of it right away.
